So You’re Thinking About Freelancing? Read This First.
Freelancing isn’t just a job change, it’s a mindset shift, a lifestyle reset, and one of the most rewarding (and confronting) decisions you’ll ever make. Whether you’re on the cusp of handing in your notice or already mid-leap, this one’s for you.
Over the past few years, I’ve made the transition myself, from agency life straight out of college to now running Studio CA, working with brands I love, and designing a life that feels true to me. It hasn’t been without its challenges, but it’s been worth every second.
Recently, I put together a guide for creatives thinking about making the jump, whether you’re a designer, art director, strategist or somewhere in between. I poured into it all the lessons I wish someone had handed me when I was starting out.
Here’s a taste of what I learned.
It’s Not Just About Work — It’s About Who You Want to Be
One of the biggest myths about freelancing is that it’s just about having more control over your schedule or getting to choose the “fun” projects. And sure, that’s part of it. But the deeper truth is this:
You’re not just building a business, you’re designing a life.
You’ll go from structure to self-led. From stability to freedom. From being told what to do, to learning how to back your ideas and processes. It’s empowering, but it’s also real work, mentally, emotionally, and creatively.
Lessons I’ve Learned (Sometimes the Hard Way)
Boundaries are everything, and you have to communicate them early
Red flags don’t turn green with time
You don’t need a five-year plan, just a direction that feels right
Your value doesn’t shrink when you leave the agency — it expands
Inspiration isn’t found in your inbox — it’s out in the world
Systems will save you (even if you’re not a “systems person”)
It’s ok to change your mind and evolve
If You’re on the Fence…
You don’t have to have it all figured out. Honestly, you never will. But what you do need is belief in yourself, a willingness to learn, and the courage to bet on your own timing.
Start with one small shift:
→ Build your portfolio
→ Create your brand
→ Reach out to someone you admire
→ Share your work
→ Say no to the wrong thing to make room for the right one
Want to Go Deeper?
I’ve created a guide that walks through the entire transition from agency to freelance, from mindset and process to branding and client management. It’s honest, actionable, and full of the kind of advice I wish I had when I was starting out.
If you’re ready to start designing a career that works for you, not the other way around, this guide is for you.
You can grab the guide here on this website if you go over to the SHOP tab.
